Thoughts from a FriendLine volunteer

When I first moved to Melbourne, I was looking for a way to connect with the community here and to connect with people in general. Moving to a new city is exciting but it can also be a bit daunting and lonely at times. Having personally experienced loneliness at different stages of life, when I first heard of Friends For Good I thought it was such a simple yet powerful idea!

Volunteering with FriendLine has given me the chance to speak with people from all walks of life: from country to city folk, youngsters to the young at heart, introverts to extroverts. It is great to listen to and share stories, interests, and some humour with everyone who calls FriendLine. The most special thing about FriendLine for me is chatting with people and finding what brings us together, be it a love of music, current affairs, the beach, quantum physics, the experience of existential crises, or comparing the best soup recipes to help keep warm during winter. Tip: anything with potatoes, chilli, barley, or lentils seem to be crowd favourites thus far.

A big thank you to all of those who have got in touch with FriendLine and for getting the conversation started on loneliness (and plenty of other things).
